Comeback Club
I can set a clear goal, plan what I will try when I get stuck, and come back after a "not yet".

- Whole class for the hook and teach, then students or pairs on laptops, then partners.
- You need
- The tool on a projector. One laptop per student or per pair. Scrap paper for Apply and the exit check.

Before class
- Open the tool on the projector in Gym: Pattern Ladder and Memory Mirror are open, three doors locked. Sound is on.
- Nothing saves unless someone presses Save Bix. On shared laptops, a saved Bix greets the next student; Start over in the Locker clears it.
- In the teacher notes, read Good to know: Take three breaths is one quick pause; a student who is truly upset goes to the counselor.
Hook 5 min
- "Two kids solve the same puzzle. One gets it right away. One gets it wrong, tries a new way, then gets it. Who learned more?" (Most say the first. Some say the second, because they figured something out.)
- "This gym gives points for both. Which is worth more?"
Teach 10 min
Teacher drives, class votes.
- Press Goals and read the cards. "How could you tell you finished one?" (Each has a number or a clear end.) Tap Make 2 comebacks.
- The plan cards slide up: "Make a plan: when I'm stuck, I'll try..." Class votes; pick Break it into parts. Point at the card: "When I'm stuck, I'll try: Break it into parts". "Why plan this before we are stuck?" (When you're stuck you might panic or quit. A plan tells you what to do next.)
- Press Gym, tap the Pattern Ladder door. Rung 1 (circle, square, circle, square, ?): class votes, tap red circle. Point at Know-how: it went up by 1.
- Press Next rung. Rung 2 is 2, 4, 6, 8, ?. Say "Let's see what a mistake does here" and tap 9 on purpose. "What happened to Know-how? To Bix's face?" (Know-how did not drop. Bix has a hand on its chin, thinking, not sad.)
- The strategy cards slide up. Follow the plan: tap Break it into parts. "What do the labels show?" (+2 each time.) Tap 10.
- Stop here: Know-how jumped from 1 to 5, and a gold stripe slid onto Bix's headband. "The first try earned 1. The comeback earned 4. Why would the gym pay more for coming back?" (You kept going and tried a strategy. That is how you get better.) This is the surprise.
Practice 18 min
- Students or pairs open the tool on laptops. Each one starts in Goals: pick one goal card, then a plan card. Goals only count from the moment you pick them, so goal first, then Gym.
- Rule for the period: after a "Not yet," use a strategy card before Just try again. Pairs swap the mouse each rung. When someone taps Ask a friend, the neighbor really answers: "What do you notice?"
- At about 8 minutes, stop the class: "Who finished a goal? What did the gym ask you?" (Goal done! What helped most?) "What opened?" (Light Mat.) "Which strategy helped most?"
- Keep going: a new goal, a new room. Fast finishers aim for Number Lift.
- Last minute: everyone presses Locker. Tap the Coach's corner card "Clear goals" and read it together. Press Save Bix only if the same student uses this laptop next time.
Apply 8 min
- "Pick a real goal for our class this week, as clear as the gym's cards." On paper, students write it with a number or a clear finish, then "When I'm stuck, I'll try: ___" using one of the six strategies.
- Partners trade papers: "Could you tell when they reached it?" (Yes means it has a number, a day or a finish line.) Fix one goal together.
- Two volunteers share: "Which strategy first, and why?"
Exit check 4 min
On scrap paper: "Jada's goal is: I want to be better at reading. Rewrite it so she can tell when she reached it. Then write the strategy card she should try first when she gets stuck, and one reason." (Read 20 minutes every night this week. Break it into parts: read one page at a time.) A vague goal or no strategy means another look at the cards in Goals.
Support and stretch
- Support: post the six strategy names on the board and the frame "My goal is . When I'm stuck, I'll try ."
- Support: let a student keep Pattern Ladder all period; the hint under Use a hint helps on every rung.
- Stretch: "Make a comeback in three different rooms. Which strategy worked best in which room, and why?"
- Stretch: "Finish Summit Circuit. Which of the four puzzles was hardest, and what did you try?"
Short on time
- Hook (2 min), then Teach steps 1 to 6 on the projector only (10 min).
- Skip Practice. Do the exit check as a quick talk with a partner (4 min).
