Decision Tree

I can think ahead to what each option leads to over time, and explain why people with different goals can choose differently.

Before class

  • Open Grow. The Double Booking (Dev) is loaded with nothing planted. Sound is on.
  • At laptop size the setup paragraph sits at the bottom of the panel; find it before class.
  • Read Good to know in the teacher notes: the dilemmas are made up, and the school counselor is the next step if one stirs something up. Don't reload during class: a found graft lasts only this session.

Hook 5 min

  1. "Think of a movie or book character whose choice felt great that night and went badly a week later." (Skipped studying, ate all the candy, told a lie to get out of something.)
  2. "Why didn't they see it coming?" (They only thought about right now.) "Today we grow a decision as a tree and slide time forward."

The Double Booking, teacher drives, class calls it (11 min):

  1. Read the setup and the sign on the trunk: "Practice or the party?" Ask: "What matters to Dev?" Turn on all four chips: Keep my word to the team, Be a good friend to Ana, Have fun, Be ready for the meet.
  2. Tap the four option cards to plant A to D. Each branch shows its Right away leaf. "Which branch looks best right now?" (C, ask Coach to leave early: three ups, Dev arrives as the cake comes out.)
  3. Press Make a call. Hands-up vote, then tap the class's pick to flag it.
  4. Press Play and watch the badges change. At Next month, read the result line ("You called it." or "Surprise: D is standing best by next month."). "Why did C fade?" (The rushed test shows up as a glitch, and the make-up hour eats Tuesday.) "Why is A Wilting, 2 up, 6 down?" (The team waited, a teammate covered, the arm jams at the meet.)
  5. Press Graft. "Which two options could both happen?" Volunteers try pairs on the stage; C with D grows G. "Is the combo the winner?" (No. G is 7 up, 2 down; D is 8 up, 1 down.)
  6. Press Who it touches. "Which leaves land on someone besides Dev?" (The team, Coach, Ana.)

Partners (7 min):

  1. Pairs pick Kai, Nia or Theo, turn on goals, plant all four, Make a call, then Play. "What surprised you?"

Make sense 10 min

  1. Back on the projector at Next month, press Choose a branch and tap the class's choice. Read the card's question aloud: "Which consequence did you not see coming when you planted the branches?" Take three answers, then Back to the tree.
  2. Switch to Side by side (the graft shows because the class found it). Turn on Have fun under Goals A and Be a good friend to Ana under Goals B. Slide to Right away: the line says "Both goal sets agree here."
  3. Press Play. At Next month: "Standing best at Next month: A: D. B: G. Same choices, different goals, different best branch." Ask: "Is either tree wrong?" (No. They care about different things.)
  4. Press Swap goal sets. "What does this say about two friends who argue over the same choice?" (They may want different things, not be wrong.)

Apply 7 min

  1. On the board, a new made-up dilemma: "Sam promised to help a cousin move boxes Saturday morning. The coach just added an extra soccer practice at the same time."
  2. Pairs draw a paper tree: a trunk with the question, three option branches, and three leaves up each one labeled Right away, Next week, Next month. They pick two of Sam's goals and mark each leaf up, down or dash.
  3. "Can two options both happen? Draw that graft." Two pairs share the branch that changed most.

Exit check 5 min

On scrap paper, for Sam: "Write one option that looks good right away but could wilt by next month, and the leaf that makes it wilt." (Skip moving boxes to go to practice. Right away: good practice. Next month: the cousin stops asking Sam for help.) Students who only write a Right away leaf need another round in Grow with Play.

Support and stretch

  • Support: in Grow, turn on one goal only so each leaf has a single mark to read.
  • Stretch: "In The Quiz Photo, plant all four and try every mix of goals. Can you make A, memorize the answers, stand best by next month?" (No, under any goal set.)
  • Stretch: "In Side by side, find two goal sets that agree at Right away and split by Next month."

Short on time

  • Hook (3 min), then The Double Booking: plant A to D, Make a call, Play, Graft (10 min).
  • End with the exit check (4 min).
