Smoothie Lab
I can use ratio language, tables of equivalent ratios, graphs and unit rates to scale a recipe.

- Explore first
- Grouping
- Whole class for the hook, then pairs on devices.
- You need
- The tool on the projector and on student devices. Graph paper for ratio tables.

Before class
- Open Explore with an empty jug.
- The jug holds 24 scoops. Adding fruit after blending starts a fresh jug.
- Smoothie color is mixed from the fruit amounts, so equivalent recipes really are the same color.
Hook 5 min
- Make 4 scoops of strawberry and 6 of banana. Press Blend and taste. That's batch 1.
- "I want a smaller batch that tastes exactly the same. How many scoops of each?" Take guesses.
Explore 13 min
- Make 2 strawberry and 3 banana, and blend. The owner says it tastes exactly like batch 1, and the log marks it "= #1."
- Pairs try other recipes and predict which will taste the same as batch 1. They blend to check.
- Pairs look at the graph. "Where do the equal-tasting recipes land?" (On one straight line through 0.)
- Ask: "The layers in the jug are each one scoop. What fraction of the smoothie is strawberry?"
Make sense 10 min
- "Why do 4 : 6 and 2 : 3 taste the same?" (Both parts were divided by 2.)
- Build a ratio table on the board: 2 : 3, 4 : 6, 6 : 9, 8 : 12. "What do you multiply by to get each row?"
- Find the unit rate: "How many scoops of banana for 1 scoop of strawberry?" (1.5.)
- "Why do all the equal-tasting recipes sit on a straight line that starts at 0?"
Apply 12 min
- Pairs switch to Orders. Each order asks for a recipe plus one condition: scale up, fill to a total, simplest form, a percent, a unit rate.
- Every try lands on the graph: red tastes wrong, gold tastes right but misses the condition, green fills the order.
- "What did you multiply by? How do you know?"
Exit check 5 min
On a card: "A smoothie uses 3 scoops of mango for every 5 of yogurt. Make a ratio table with three rows. How much mango for 20 scoops of yogurt? What is the unit rate of yogurt per scoop of mango?"
Support and stretch
- Support: stay with doubling and halving before other scale factors.
- Support: use the hint after two wrong tries.
- Stretch: fill every order in Orders on the first try.
- Stretch: "Two batches are the same color. What do you know about their ratios?"
Short on time
- Batch 1 and batch 2 in Explore (8 min).
- Two orders in Orders (8 min), then the exit card (4 min).
