Before class

  • Open Travel. Fourteen works of art are pinned on the world map where they were made.
  • If a new class is using the tool, press Start a new passport in Passport.
  • Read the cultural notes for the amo (house post) and the ci wara headdress. They are respected objects; their movement prompts are about the shape and the dance.

Hook 4 min

  1. "Today we're going on a trip around the world without leaving the carpet. We need a passport!"
  2. Show the empty Passport. "Every place we visit, we get a stamp."

Explore 13 min

  1. On Travel, tap the giant wave in Japan. The visit stamps the passport.
  2. Ask the See, Think, Wonder questions, tapping each to move on. Then press Find 1 and let a child point to the detail.
  3. "How does it make you feel?" Tap the faces to tally the class. Finish with the Try it movement.
  4. Press Surprise trip and visit one or two more works the same way. A good pair: the blue hippo from Egypt and the Diné (Navajo) wearing blanket.

Make sense 6 min

  1. Open Compare with two of the works you visited. "What is the same? What is different?" Press A clue if the class gets stuck.
  2. "Some of these were made to be used: worn, danced with, or to hold food. Which ones? What were they for?"
  3. "People in these places still make art today."

Apply 8 min

Children choose a favorite work from today and draw it, adding one thing they noticed up close. Under it, they "write" (or tell you) where it was made.

Exit check 4 min

Show one work from today. Each child tells a partner one thing they see and one feeling it gives them, using "I see... It makes me feel..." Listen in for children who name a detail.

Support and stretch

  • Support: ask only the "See" question at first, and accept pointing.
  • Support: visit fewer places and spend more time on each one.
  • Stretch: "Why do you think the artist made it this way?"
  • Stretch: find the place on the map and say if it is near or far from us.

Short on time

  • Visit one work in Travel with See, Think, Wonder and Find 1 (6 min).
  • Open Compare with a second work (4 min).
