I can name places and helpers in a community and say where I go and who works there in full sentences.

Before class

  • Open Explore with Show place names on.
  • Post the sentence frames where children can see them.
  • Think of two or three real places near school the children know.

Hook 4 min

  1. "Where did you go last weekend?" Take two or three answers.
  2. "A town has lots of places, and each place has helpers. Let's take a walk around this town."

Model 8 min

  1. In Explore, tap the library. Listen: "This is the library. Librarians work here." Say it together.
  2. Tap the fire station, the bakery and the vet. Each time, the class repeats the sentence.
  3. Model a frame with your own life: "I need bread. I go to the bakery."

Make 10 min

  1. Switch to Where do I go? Read the need aloud. Children answer with the frame, "I go to the ___," then a child taps the place.
  2. A wrong tap names that place and what happens there. Talk about it, then try again.
  3. Switch to Who helps? Children use the frame "A ___ works at the ___."
  4. Partners take turns: one says a need, the other answers with the frame.

Share 5 min

  1. Turn off Show place names. Point to a place. The class names it from the picture.
  2. Ask: "What is this place called in your home language?" Let children share.
  3. "Who helps you when you're sick? When you're lost?" Remind them: in an emergency, call 911 or tell a grown-up.

Exit check 3 min

Each child draws one helper and tells you a sentence: "A ___ works at the . They ." Listen for the place word and the helper word.

Support and stretch

  • Support: beginners point and say one word in the blank. Keep the frames on the screen.
  • Support: use only six places at first.
  • Stretch: add a "because": "I go to the vet because my dog is sick."
  • Stretch: "What helper would you like to be? Why?"

Short on time

  • Explore four places, saying each sentence together (5 min).
  • One round of Where do I go? (5 min).
