Community Project Planner

I can lead a team project by matching people to work they're good at, checking in, and giving people rest, and explain why that keeps the team going.

Before class

  • Open Run a Project on the projector. The three project cards show; Riverside Cleanup says "Start here".
  • In the teacher notes, read Good to know: the volunteers and numbers are a made-up model, and the school counselor is the next step if a student is upset.
  • On shared laptops, Save on this device keeps a plan in that browser for the next class to see. Plan to print, or to press Clear, then Clear everything, at the end.

Hook 5 min

  1. "A club has six volunteers and six weeks. Leader A says: everyone works as hard as they can, every week. Leader B gives people rest weeks. Hands up: who finishes more?" (Most pick A.)
  2. "Today you lead the team. Half of you will test Leader A's way. We'll see who was right."

Riverside Cleanup, teacher drives, class votes (8 min):

  1. Press Lead this project on Riverside Cleanup. Point at one volunteer card: filled icon is the strong skill, outline the okay skill, then hours, the energy word Fired up and "Cares: ?".
  2. Week 1: click a volunteer, then a task. Put Mei on Map the trash hot spots, Luis and Grace on Sign up cleanup volunteers, Dana and Ben on Sort the recycling. Press Buy signboards $90 and put Tariq on Keep It Clean trail signs.
  3. Stop on the recycling card: "It says 2 extra hours wasted. What is it telling us?" (Too many people on a small task.)
  4. Class votes on a lead move. Pick Check in, then Run week 1. "Grace and Ben got +13, everyone else +3. Why?" (They care about Check-ins. Now every card shows what each person cares about.) This is the surprise: people want different things.
  5. Press Start week 2. Read the event aloud ("Rain raised the river and moved the trash.") and vote between Re-map the hot spots and Wait a week to look. "Either way, what happens to Cleanup day?" (It waits.)

Partners (10 min):

  1. Pairs open Riverside Cleanup and take turns: one places people, one picks the lead move. Pair A's way: everyone on one task and Push harder every week. Pair B's way: strong skills, rest anyone Tired, Check in first, then take turns with Thank the team and Ask for ideas. Play to the report.

Make sense 8 min

  1. Two A pairs and two B pairs read their report's first line aloud. (A pairs usually get "Partly done" or "Not this time"; B pairs usually get "Finished, and the team wants to do another one.")
  2. "Push harder gets more done this week. When did the cost show up?" (Around week 4 or 5. Energy hit 0 and people were Stepping back for two weeks.)
  3. "Did anyone thank the team two weeks in a row? What did the summary say?" ("Same move as last week: it lands a little softer.") "Why might that be true for real people too?"
  4. On the board: match skills, check in, rest, recognize. "Which did you skip?"

Apply 10 min

  1. Groups of three or four switch to Plan Your Own and plan a real project (a food drive, a hallway mural, a park cleanup). Stuck groups press Start from an example and change it.
  2. Fill in Project name, Who it helps and What done looks like, then tasks with a skill, a role and weeks W1 to W6. Use roles like Build lead, never classmates' names.
  3. Tick at least two boxes under How I'll keep the team going and read the notes in the panel. "The plan says Week 2 has 4 tasks at once. What would you move?"
  4. Press Print plan, or Save on this device.

Exit check 4 min

On scrap paper: "Week 3. Ben starts the week Tired. Luis cares about Having a say. Who do you rest, which lead move do you pick, and why?" (Rest Ben so he comes back strong. Ask for ideas, because Luis gets a bigger boost and the team's idea cuts work.) Students who push everyone or skip rest should revisit their report's Week by week list.

Support and stretch

  • Support: give the rule "strong skill first, check in week 1, rest anyone Tired."
  • Stretch: "Finish Winter Coat Drive with the top outcome. Money is tight: when is Fundraise worth the hours?"
  • Stretch: "In Library Lot Garden, some tasks wait for others. Plan the order in Plan Your Own before you play it."

Short on time

  • Hook (3 min), then weeks 1 and 2 of Riverside Cleanup as a class, with the Check in surprise (10 min).
  • Skip Plan Your Own. End with the exit check (4 min).
