Before class

  • Open Meet the feelings. Bear's voice is on; Read replays the last thing Bear said.
  • The Class forecast keeps no names and is never saved. If a child picks a stormy feeling, follow up quietly later.

Hook 4 min

  1. Look out the window together. "What's the weather today? Does weather change during the day?"
  2. "Feelings are like weather. Let's meet Bear, the weather reporter."

Explore 10 min

  1. In Meet the feelings, tap Happy. Bear smiles, the screen turns sunny, and Bear says how happy feels in the body.
  2. Tap Sad, Angry and Calm. Each time ask: "When have you felt this way? Where do you feel it in your body?"
  3. Children show each feeling with their bodies: sunny arms up, rainy droopy shoulders.

Make sense 5 min

  1. "Is any weather bad weather?" (No. Every kind of weather is okay, and it changes.)
  2. "Can you feel two kinds of weather at once?" (Yes: excited and worried on the first day of school.)

Apply 8 min

  1. Switch to Stories. Read a story aloud. "How might they feel?" Tap the weather the class chooses. There is no wrong answer.
  2. Listen to Bear's kind words or good idea. "What else could help?"
  3. Do two or three stories, then open Class forecast. Children come up one at a time and tap their weather. Press Make the forecast.

Exit check 3 min

Each child draws their weather right now and tells you one thing that helps when they feel that way. Listen for a feeling word and a helper idea.

Support and stretch

  • Support: start with four feelings: happy, sad, angry and calm.
  • Support: let children point to the weather instead of naming it.
  • Stretch: "What could we say to a friend whose weather is rainy?"
  • Stretch: meet Proud and Confused, and share a time you felt each one.

Short on time

  • Meet three feelings in Meet the feelings (5 min).
  • One story in Stories (4 min).
