Before class

  • Open the tool. The frog is waiting on the Start rock in Count along.
  • Decide whether to leave Say the numbers on. Turn it off later, so the class does all the counting.

Hook 4 min

  1. "Can anyone count to 100? Let's see how far we get together." Count out loud as a class until it gets shaky.
  2. "Today a frog helps us count all the way to 100, with a shortcut too."

Teach 8 min

  1. Press Hop! and count "one!" together. Then press Keep hopping and count along out loud.
  2. Stop at 19. "What comes next?" (20.) Stop again at 29 and at 39. "What do you notice?" (After every 9 comes a new ten.)
  3. Switch to 10s. The frog goes back to the start rock and jumps a whole row at a time: 10, 20, 30. "Look, the tens all have a flower."
  4. Count by tens to 100 together, holding up all ten fingers for each jump.

Practice 10 min

  1. Tap a lily pad, like 46, and count on from there together. Try two more starting pads.
  2. Switch to Where will it land? The numbers hide. Ask: "What number is the frog on?" Then press Go! and count along with the hops.
  3. "Where did it land?" The class calls it out, then press Reveal to check.
  4. Press New puzzle for two more. Turn on Show the tens if the class needs help.

Apply 5 min

  1. Hop in place and count together: ten hops by ones, then count by tens with a big jump for each ten.
  2. Start in the middle: "Start at 52 and hop 3 times. Where are we?" (55.)

Exit check 3 min

Call on children one at a time: "Start at 27 and count on 3." "What comes after 39?" "Count by tens from 50." Note who still needs to start from 1.

Support and stretch

  • Support: keep Say the numbers on and count along with the voice.
  • Support: count to 20 or 30 first, then build up over a few days.
  • Stretch: turn off Say the numbers and let the class do all the counting.
  • Stretch: "The frog is on 52 and hops 3 times. Where will it land? How do you know?"

Short on time

  • Count by ones to 30 with Hop!, then count by tens to 100 (6 min).
  • One Where will it land? puzzle (4 min).
