Before class

  • Open Explore.
  • Libraries label spines differently (E or EASY, J or FIC). Check your own shelves and pick real books whose labels you can compare with the tool's.

Hook 4 min

  1. Hold up the three real books. "These all live in different places in our library. How could we know where each one goes?"
  2. Point to a spine label. "This little sticker is a secret address."

Explore 12 min

  1. Press Take the tour. Hoot visits picture books, fiction, nonfiction, the checkout desk and the reading rug.
  2. Tap nonfiction and look at its neighborhoods: 500 science, 590 animals, 900 places and history.
  3. Switch to Spine detective. Read the label together: "E, ELL." "Where does this book live?" A child drags it to the section.
  4. Keep going for the round. A book sent to the rug gets a smile: a good place to read it, but where does it live?

Make sense 5 min

  1. "What's the difference between fiction and nonfiction?" (Made-up stories, and true information.)
  2. Compare the tool's labels with your three real books. "Our library uses ___ for picture books."
  3. "Why does it matter that books go back in the right place?"

Apply 6 min

Switch to ABC shelf. Children tap the picture book that comes first in ABC order, then the next, until the shelf is full. Sing or say the alphabet when the class gets stuck.

Exit check 3 min

Hold up each real book. Children point to where in the room (or the library) it lives and say the section name: picture books, fiction or nonfiction.

Support and stretch

  • Support: use only E and a number in Spine detective at first.
  • Support: keep an alphabet strip on the board for ABC shelf.
  • Stretch: "Why do fairy tales live in nonfiction, at 398?"
  • Stretch: find a real book from the 590 animal neighborhood during library time.

Short on time

  • Take the tour in Explore (4 min).
  • One round of Spine detective (5 min).
