Before class

  • Open Lines at the first stop.
  • Lines, shapes and colors are three of the elements of art.

Hook 4 min

  1. Draw a zigzag on the board without talking. Then a wavy line. "What's different about these lines?"
  2. "Artists use lines to make whole pictures. Let's go on a line safari!"

Model 10 min

  1. A line draws itself across the savanna. "What kind of line is this?" Press Name it! and do its body move together.
  2. Press Draw along and let a child trace the line on the board.
  3. Press Next stop for four or five more lines: vertical, diagonal, zigzag, curved, wavy. Earlier lines fade back, and the new one glows yellow.
  4. Switch to Shapes. Pick circle at the bottom and the class finds every one. Then try triangles.

Make 13 min

  1. Switch to Colors. Tap red, then yellow. "What color did the chameleon turn?" Try the other two mixes.
  2. Play one round of Hide and seek: help the chameleon hide on something its color.
  3. At tables, children draw their own safari picture using at least four kinds of lines and two shapes. Ask early finishers to color part of it with a mixed color.

Share 5 min

  1. Open Draw on the big screen. Two or three children add one line each to a class picture using the line brushes.
  2. Children hold up their drawings. Classmates find a zigzag, a spiral or a circle in each one.

Exit check 3 min

Call out a line name: "Wavy!" "Zigzag!" "Spiral!" Children draw it in the air with a finger. Then: "Which two colors make green?" (Yellow and blue.)

Support and stretch

  • Support: stay with five lines: horizontal, vertical, zigzag, curved and wavy.
  • Support: let children trace lines on the board before drawing their own.
  • Stretch: "Which lines feel calm? Which feel busy or excited?"
  • Stretch: "What shapes make up your house? Your face?"

Short on time

  • Three stops in Lines with Name it! (6 min).
  • Colors with one mix (4 min).
