Marching Band
Line up a marching band in pairs and rows. Does everyone get a partner? How many ways can 12 musicians march?
- Students will

- Time

A 5-minute start (Partners)
- Start with 7 musicians. Ask: "Does everyone have someone to march with?" Let the class spot the one left alone.
- Add one musician at a time. Before each click, have the class call out "partner" or "alone."
- Ask: "Which numbers always leave someone alone?" Collect them on the board: odd numbers.
Then try Rows
- Set 3 rows of 4. Read the sentence together: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
- Ask: "Can 12 musicians march in a different shape?" The tool keeps a list of every way the class finds.
- Try a number that only lines up one way (like 5 or 7). Why won't it make a rectangle?
Good to know
- Sound is off until you turn it on. Click any musician to hear them play, or press March!
- Keyboard: + and − change the band, M marches.
- There's no score. The point is noticing patterns and saying them out loud.
