A 5-minute start
- Build a straw house. Before pressing Wolf, ask the class to predict: "Will it stand?" Then test.
- Try sticks, then bricks. Each result lands in the lab notebook.
- Now press Peek on a brick house, then a glass house. Ask: "Which would make a good window?"
The big idea
No material is best at everything. Bricks beat the wolf but you can't see through them. Glass lets light in but isn't cozy. Wool is warm but soaks up rain. Builders choose materials for the job, and often mix them (brick walls, glass windows, a metal roof).
Talk about it
- Which material would you use for a roof? Why?
- What would make a good blanket? A raincoat? A window?
- Why do you think real houses use more than one material?
Good to know
- Walls are tested by Wolf, Peek and Cold night. The roof is tested by Rain.
- Sound is off until you turn it on. There's no score.
- Properties are simplified for 2nd grade (each material gets a 0-3 rating).
