Before class

  • Open Hero's day. The first moment is Pip after breakfast.
  • Habits depend on home routines that children don't always control. Keep the talk about what helps bodies, never about whose family does what.
  • Decide whether the class will wash hands at a sink during Apply.

Hook 4 min

  1. "Who has a superpower that keeps them strong and happy every day?" Pause. "You all do. It's called a healthy habit."
  2. "Today we help Pip the fox be a hero all day long, from breakfast to bedtime."

Explore 12 min

  1. Read the first moment. Children hold up one finger or two to vote. Tap each card to count the votes, then press Decide.
  2. Watch Pip's meters move: energy, clean and smile. Read Pip's line together, then press Next.
  3. When the class picks a less healthy choice, press Try the other choice. "What changed on the meters?"
  4. Keep going through the seven moments to bedtime. Stop at the bedtime choice: "Why does Pip feel grumpy after staying up late?"
  5. Look at how Pip feels the next morning.

Make sense 6 min

  1. Switch to When do we...? Tap every right answer for wash hands and drink water. One answer is always silly. Let children find it.
  2. Ask: "Which habit helped Pip's energy meter? Which helped clean?" Make two lists on the board.

Apply 5 min

  1. Open Timers and do handwashing together: five steps with 20 seconds of scrubbing, acted out with pretend soap. If you have a sink, do it for real.
  2. Stand up and move with the music for 30 seconds of toothbrushing: "top teeth, bottom teeth, front, back."

Exit check 3 min

Each child turns to a partner and finishes the sentence: "My healthy habit is . It helps my body ." Listen to four or five pairs. Children who name a habit but not how it helps need the meters again tomorrow.

Support and stretch

  • Support: act out each habit before voting (brushing, washing, sleeping), so the cards make sense.
  • Support: use the pictures on the cards and let children point instead of speaking.
  • Stretch: "Which habit do you already do every day? Which one could you add?"
  • Stretch: draw a picture of Pip doing their favorite healthy habit, with one sentence.

Short on time

  • Hero's day to bedtime, with voting (10 min).
  • The handwashing timer to finish (3 min).
