Before class

  • Open Walk the street at the first stop.
  • Each stop ends with what to do, not with what goes wrong. Keep the tone calm.
  • Some children have had scary experiences with cars, fires or water. Watch for worry and follow up quietly.

Hook 3 min

  1. "Biscuit the dog is going on a walk today, and Biscuit needs your help to stay safe."
  2. "When you see a choice, hold up one finger or two to vote."

Explore 13 min

  1. Read the first stop: Biscuit wants to cross to the park. Children vote, then tap the choice.
  2. A safe choice moves Biscuit on. An unsafe one explains what could happen, and the class tries again.
  3. Visit all seven stops: the crosswalk, a bike helmet, buckling up, a school fire drill, a hot stove, the pool and a bottle of medicine.

Make sense 5 min

  1. "Which stop was hardest? Why?"
  2. Fire safety: "Get out, stay out, never hide, never go back for toys. Where is our meeting place?"
  3. Medicine: "Only from a trusted grown-up. If you find pills, tell a grown-up and don't touch them."

Apply 6 min

  1. Switch to Crossing practice. Biscuit waits at the curb. The class says "Look left, right and left again," and waits for the walking person.
  2. Children practice at the tape curb: stop, look left, right, left, and hold a grown-up's hand. Remind them that young children cross with a grown-up.

Exit check 3 min

Switch to Safe or not? and read four cards. Children answer with thumbs up or thumbs down. Listen to their reasons for "Chase a ball into the street."

Support and stretch

  • Support: stay with three stops: the crosswalk, the helmet and the fire drill.
  • Support: act out each safe choice with the whole body.
  • Stretch: "What would you tell a younger child about the stove?"
  • Stretch: "Do you know your grown-up's phone number?" Practice saying it at home.

Short on time

  • Four stops in Walk the street (6 min).
  • Crossing practice (4 min).
